Lauraine Walpole Club Cpt 2011

St Farnan's Ladies (Sligo) Notes   10/05/2017

  1. ST FARNAN’S LADIES
  2. The U-12’s got back to winning ways with a resounding victory over St. Nathy’s in Templeboy on Thursday. The side have one remaining game in the group stages, a re-arranged fixture against neighbours Eoghan Rua, which will take place tomorrow, Monday, after which they will know their situation as regards to the knockout stages.
  3. The U-14’s suffered a three point defeat at the hands of Geevagh in Templeboy on Tuesday last. Th...e side looked to be well on the way to victory when holding a sizeable lead around the mid-way stage but the visitors put in a strong finish and snatched victory with a goal right at the death, their third such score in the final quarter. The final score was 4-10 to 3-10. The side aren’t due to play again until Tuesday, May 30th, when they will travel to Curry.
  4. Club player Claire Dunne had the honour of captaining her county team which came agonisingly close to defeating Mayo in the Connacht U-16 C’ship clash between the sides on Friday last. Claire, who lined out at midfield, was one of three club players in the side with Roisin McHugh and Rachel O’Brien also starting at right half back and full forward respectively. St. Pat’s players Eimear Kearins(full back) and Alanna Cunnane (right half forward) who play their football with our club also made the starting fifteen.   Rachel scored 2-2 while Alanna also had the ball in the net only to see it disallowed. Paul O’Brien and Anne Cunnane are members of the management team. Hard luck to all concerned. Congratulations to Orla Cunnane was among the starting fifteen for the Sligo U-14 team who won the Connacht B final on sunday against Mayo.
  5. A reminder that Gaelic4Mothers and Others, which the club ran successfully for a few years almost a decade ago is being revived. This programme is aimed at ladies whose days of playing football at a competitive level are behind them and it is open to anyone regardless of whether they have played a lot of, a bit off, or absolutely no football in the past.  The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment whilst at the same time learning some of the skills of the game. A number of Blitzes are organised at Provincial and National level each year whilst there is also the possibility that a club can be selected to play in a series of exhibition games in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final Day. Registration and the first training session will be held from 8-9 pm on Monday, May 15th, in the Community Park.
  6. Congratulations to former club underage player Edel Hynes and her partner Mark O’Hara on the birth of their baby boy cormac recently.
  7. Well done to local lad Paddy O’Connor on making his Connacht Snr C’ship debut with Sligo against New York on Sunday. Paddy lined out and midfield and made a significant contribution to his side’s victory which included kicking two quality points before having to depart the field through injury midway through the second half.
