St Farnan's Club Notes   17/05/2017

ST. FARNAN’S LADIES

A number of club players donned the black and white jersey in the past week with both the  county U-16 and Intermediate teams in action in their respective provincial championships.

Claire Dunne captained the U-16’s from centre half back in a much reshuffled lineout due to the absence of at least four regulars when they played Roscommon in what turned out to be a thriller. Claire was joined in the starting line-up as usual by Roisin McHugh, Rachel O’Brien,  Eimear Kearins and Alanna Cunnane and the five of them gave their all in this epic clash. The Rossies seemed to be on their way to an easy win when they led by 3-7 to 1-2 at the interval but Sligo had other ideas and put in a powerful second half performance. Unfortunately they had left themselves too much to do and ended up losing by 3-10 to 2-6 in the end.

The Intermediate team opened this year’s championship campaign with a trip to Drumshanbo to take on arch rivals Leitrim on Sunday. There has been little or nothing between these two sides in recent years and this most recent instalment was no different with just a single goal separating them at the end of another gripping encounter. Sligo were the better side in the opening half and were in a commanding position at the break leading by 2-7 to 0-3, However the home side, assisted by the considerable breeze in the second period, gradually reduced the gap but the visitors held out to take the victory on a final scoreline of 2-14 to 3-8. Our own Jacqui Mulligan played the entire game whilst Leah Kelly was among the substitutes. Well done to all concerned.

On the club front the U-12’s enjoyed mixed fortunes during the week starting with defeat to Eoghan Rua but recovering well to beat Ballisodare a few days later. The side will contest the semi-final against St. Molaise Gaels in Grange on Thursday.

A reminder that Registration for Gaelic4Mothers and Others followed by the first training session will be held from 8-9 pm this Monday, May 15th, in the Community Park.

Congratulations to former club underage player Cassandra Kilgannon and her partner Oisin Kearney on the occasion of the birth of their twin boys in the past week.
