Galway   30/01/2018

Galway made a great start to their NFL Division 1 campaign with a 4-10 to 2-6 win over Monaghan this afternoon. The game was played on astro turf at the Connacht Centre of Excellence, in wet and windy conditions. Monaghan were first to score, getting a goal from a penalty conceded in the early moments of the game. Galway responded very quickly with a point from Sarah Conneally and then a goal from Ailbhe Davoran. From that point on Galway were the dominant side. Captain Tracey Leonard scored Galway’s second goal and then added 4 points to her tally to end up our top scorer in the match. Leanne Coen, making her Senior debut, scored two goals in the first half, the second of which was a peach. Mairead Seoige also scored a first half point for Galway. Monaghan did score a second goal in the first half when the astro turf bounce caught out the Galway goalkeeper. At half time the score was 4-5 to 2-2. In the second half Monaghan scored the first point but Galway traded points scores with them through the remainder of the game and never looked under threat. Galway second half points came from Aine McDonagh, Sarah Lynch, Louise Ward and Emma Reaney. Final score was Galway 4-10 Monaghan 2-6. It is off to Donegal next week to see if we can build on this important first 2018 NFL win.
